Introduction to Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarms have been required in Australian homes since the mid to late 90s, when each state of Australia underwent separate legislative changes to line up with the 1997 National Construction Code change.

Smoke alarms are an early warning device designed to alert occupants of a home of a fire. They are required to be loud enough to wake sleeping occupants during a fire and require battery power so that they may operate during power loss.

The NFPA says that three out of five fire deaths happen in homes without smoke alarms or without working smoke alarms. If smoke alarms are working, the risk of dying in a fire is half.
