Lithium-ion battery fires ignite rapidly, and modern homes filled with synthetic materials allow flames to spread even faster. While smoke alarms are essential for early detection and giving occupants the best chance to escape, more focus must be placed on preventing these fires from occurring in the first place.

In 2025, lithium-ion battery-related house fires have surged. WA’s Department of Fire and Emergency Services reports that incidents have doubled since 2020, and the ACCC recorded a 92% increase in battery-related incidents in 2022 compared to 2020. As more everyday products rely on these batteries, greater awareness and education are critical.

Lithium-ion batteries that are poorly manufactured, mishandled, incorrectly stored, or disposed of improperly can overheat, explode, or release toxic gases.
With Christmas approaching, and many people shopping for gifts, it’s crucial to buy lithium-powered products from reputable sellers. Direct-import platforms like Temu and Shein may offer items that bypass Australian safety testing and standards, increasing the risk of faulty or unsafe batteries.

When using lithium-ion battery products, always:

  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Use only the supplied or approved charger
  • Charge and store devices in well-ventilated areas
  • Allow batteries to cool after charging
  • Replace batteries only with ones from reputable suppliers

If you notice swelling, overheating, leaking, or any damage to a battery, do not charge it. Dispose of it at a B-cycle or Recycle Mate drop-off point, never in general waste.

Smoke alarms and heat alarms from are an essential line of defence in protecting your home and family. Smoke alarms provide early warning of fast-spreading fires, while heat alarms are particularly important for areas like garages, where smoke alarms may not respond as effectively. Installing both types and having them interconnected ensures comprehensive protection, giving you peace of mind while at home, or away.
