Key Changes

To enhance fire safety across Queensland, all private homes, townhouses and units must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms installed.

Compliance Requirements You Need to Know

  • All smoke alarms must be photoelectric and comply with AS3786-2014.
  • Alarms must be hardwired to mains power with a 10-year non-removable backup battery OR be battery-powered with a 10-year non-removable battery.
  • Every alarm must be interconnected, ensuring that when one activates, they all do.
  • Ionisation smoke alarms are no longer allowed.
    Special Considerations for Caravans & Motorhomes
  • From 1 July 2024, newly registered or transferred caravans and motorhomes must have a photoelectric smoke alarm.
  • From 1 January 2027, all registered caravans and motorhomes must comply.
